Dunhuang is most famous for being an ancient town that was an important stop-over point on the Silk Road. Today, it is an oasis on the eastern edge of the Taklimakan Desert in Gansu Province, northwest China. There are many tourist attractions in Dunhuang, which is listed as a historic and cultural city.

In Chinese the character "dun" means grand and "huang" means prosperity. In the 2nd century B.C., Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty sent an imperial envoy to the western region of the country to open up a trade route which would later become the Silk Road. The imperial court set up Dunhuang Prefecture in A.D. 111 and Dunhuang evolved into a strategic town.

In addition to a dazzling array of commodities that found their way from China to Europe through this route, Buddhism from India was introduced to central China. Much of Buddhism was propagated through artistic works of art, and these images were assimilated into traditional Chinese culture. Many of these Buddhist images were carved in caves and in mountain cliffs along the Silk Road.
