A.  The Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theater will present the play Mei Ren Jiao in Beijing.

Written and directed by Wang Yansong, the play tells the tragic story of the woman involved in a forbidden love with a "revolutionary man" at the end of the Qing Dynasty.

China's leading Huamgmei Opera actress Han Zaifen, who is also the director of the company, portrays the title role.

Huangmei Opera is a local opera genre popular in Anhui, Jiangxi and Hubei provinces.

B.  A timely appearance here by Dimitris Papaioannou, the creator of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, is bringing his modern dance creation Medea to Beijing and it will rank as an important event at this year's Meet in Beijing Festival.

C.  The Peony Pavilion, the classic Kunqu Opera, is on stage at the Imperial Granary, its perfect venue. The Imperial Granary was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644) 600 years ago, exactly the time the Kunqu Opera was written. In order to further emphasize the origins of the Granary and the opera, the entire show will take place without the benefit of electricity.

D.  The Chinese Acrobatics Group, established in 1950, has toured more than 80 countries, won numerous international awards and helped foster friendships between China and other nations. Its performance includes traditional acrobatics, a circus show, magic, old Beijing folk plays and more. The show blends music, dance, local opera and martial arts.

E.  Sheng Zhongguo, the veteran Chinese violinist, will join the stage with his Japanese wife, famous pianist Seta Hiroko, at the Beijing Concert Hall tomorrow and two concerts at the Forbidden City Concert Hall on July 23 and 24. Tomorrow's program includes the Chinese piece Butterfly Lovers, Liszt's Mephisto waltzes and Chopin's Military Polonaise. Next week's concerts feature Beethoven's Violin Sonatas, Fur Elise, Schubert's Ave Maria, Dvorak's Humoreske, Schumann's Traumerei and Mozart's Turkish March.

F.  The renowned Chinese pianist Yin Chengzong, famous for arranging and premiering the Yellow River Concerto in the 1950s, will give a recital at the National Center for the Performing Arts on July 25. The 67-year-old pianist will play a program of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert in addition to his trademark piece, the Yellow River Concerto.

Born in Gulangyu, "the island of piano" in South China's Fujian province, Yin learned to play the keyboard as a boy. In 1971, he played the Yellow River Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Beijing.

In 1983, Yin became the first Chinese pianist to perform at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York.

G.  The Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale will next Tuesday perform a program of Bernstein, Dvorak and Saint-Sains' Cello Concerto with the virtuoso cellist Wang Jian.

The Shanghai-born musician was a young student when he appeared in the 1981 documentary From Mao to Mozart, about violinist Isaac Stern's tour of China following the Cultural Revolution. Largely through Stern's encouragement and support, Wang found his way to the Yale School of Music in 1985, where he studied with the renowned cellist Aldo Parisot.

Wang's first professional engagement was in 1986 at Carnegie Hall, and since then he has embarked on an international career.

H.  Conservatory Music Festival continues with piano, violin and cello solo concerts from the Franz Liszt Academy tonight; a concert for mixed ensembles from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a Piano Recital from the Korean National University of the Arts tomorrow; and a piano recital from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna on Sunday. More concerts can be expected during the week from the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale at the Forbidden Concert Hall and the National Center for Performing Arts.
