Upcoming Exhibitions In Beijing

A.  The Palace Museum, home to most of China's ancient artifacts in Beijing, has launched ten special exhibitions, which will stay open throughout the Olympics and beyond.

Most prominent of the displays, which have taken years to prepare, are 450 ancient porcelain items spanning 8,000 years; 100 ancient ink paintings of figures, landscapes and wild life from Jin Dynasty (AD 303-361) to Qing Dynasty (AD 1644-1911); and 306 sets of artifacts related to traditional Chinese sports favored by ancient Chinese emperors.

B.  The National Science and Technology Museum of China, relocated at the center of the Olympic Green Zone, is to present a grand exhibition entitled Magnificent Ancient Chinese Invention Artifacts.

Co-organized by the China Cultural Heritage Exchange Center, several regional museums and the National Science and Technology Museum of China, this exhibition will give overseas visitors a panoramic view of the history of scientific invention in ancient China. Highlights of the hundreds of exhibits include exquisite robes worn by Qing Dynasty emperors, re-creations of the century-old silk weaving and dyeing techniques, bronze ding vessels from the Warring States Period (475-376 BC).

C.  The National Science and Technology Museum of China, 5 Beichen Donglu, Chaoyang District

Young artist Gao Feng has his own one-man show at The Art Plus Beijing Gallery, showcasing 50 of his acrylic on canvas works under the title Painting Virus.

Playing with original works by ancient ink paint masters, Gao has developed his own visual language which makes a sarcastic commentary about history, contemporary life and human existence generally.

D.  Pick between two very different shows at the Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy.

An exhibition of contemporary paintings by Chinese and Korean artists features experimental works in oil and ink. The other is the photography of Mei Sheng, called Finding Dreams in the Ancient City, in which Mei expresses his love for Beijing.

E. The latest in a series of exhibitions from master artist Qi Baishi is underway with the sixth section, his flower paintings. Qi switched to this field in his 40s, drawing plum, orchard, bamboo, chrysanthemum and pine. Based on a traditional format, Qi endowed the topic with his own unique style: simple composition, vivid color and uninhibited brushstrokes.

F.  Qiang Chunsheng's Blooming Days series uses the images of flowers and beautiful faces of women to convey his ideas about the world. The smiling faces, offset by flamboyant flowers, imply a positive mood but behind the vivid color is the contemplation and introspection of the artist.

G.  Artist Zhao Jihua finds inspiration everywhere, from movies, literature and martial art novels to caricatures and computer games. Zhao combines imaginary backgrounds and exotic settings into heroic painting.

H.  The New Northeast Power - 2008 Young Artists Nominated Exhibition currently showcases the work of 10 newcomers, including Cao Liang, Feng Xu and Tian Dali. Exhibits cover oil on canvas, installation, sculptures of wood, stone and bronze.

I.  Three people, Wang Jianwei, Ni Haifeng and Tong Ang have collaborated to present a video show named Between the Light and the Dark, and a satellite exhibition of the Synthetic Times - Media Art China 2008 held at the National Art Museum of China.

J.  Photographs of Xiong Wenyun focus on the Chuanzang Road, which runs from Sichuan to Tibet. A graduate from the ink painting department of Sichuan Fine Arts Academy, Xiong uses color and line as key elements in the composition of her photos. Her exhibition focuses on such topics as art, history, environmental protection and ecology.

K.  An exhibition with a very contemporary theme, the 12 photographs of Joan Fontcuberta's designs on Googlegramas combine two artistic techniques used in search engine Google with traditional mosaics.

L.  You Jin's solo exhibition, Chaotic Code, is about the drastic effect of the information society on individuals, whose lives are reduced to codes. Employing dazzling colors and light, You conveys the subject matter with a bright, spontaneous feel.
